HOW NOTARY WORKS : 5 STEPS TO NOTARIZING YOUR DOCUMENT
Suddenly you were handed a document and was told to have it notarized. We will describe how notary works and what to expect during your visit with the notary public. Notarization is the authentication of a document as genuine or the verification that a statement was made under oath. The following are what to expect during your meeting with the notary public:
1. STEP ONE : BE PREPARED FOR YOUR MEETING WITH THE NOTARY
To avoid wasted time or unnecessary trips to the notary, have the following with you when you leave to visit the notary public:
- Your Documents
- Valid govt issued Identification > unexpired driver's license, state ID, Passport, military, green card, etc
- The document Signer , or signers, of the document
2. STEP TWO : THE SIGNER WILL PRESENT DOCUMENT & ID CARD TO THE NOTARY
The document signer must be present at the time of notarization, face to face, in the same room as the notary public.
The signer will give the the notary public their valid ID, so the notary can verify that the person listed on the document is, in fact, the person standing in front of the notary.
3. STEP THREE : INSTRUCTED TO SIGN DOCUMENT
The document signer will then be instructed to sign the document in front of the notary (or acknowledge that it is indeed their original signature on the document).
*It's best to wait to sign documents, until you are in front of the notary.
4. STEP FOUR : RECORDING THE NOTARIZATION EVENT
The notary public must then record this moment in a log, which consist of date & time, the title of the document, type of ID used to verify Identity, your signature and thumb print to ensure proof of personal appearance. (That's why it's important the signer must be in front of the notary at the time of notarization)
5. STEP FIVE : THE NOTARIZATION CEREMONY, the AUTHENTICATION OF THE DOCUMENT
Finally, after the notary has verified the signer and witness the signing of your document, then the notary public will authenticate your document by notarization. Placing an official seal onto the document, so it is ready for the document's issuing or receiving agency.
