WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE A DOCUMENT NOTARIZED

WHAT IS A NOTARIZED DOCUMENT | BENEFITS OF NOTARIZING A DOCUMENT | WHAT IS NOTARIZATION

NOTARIZED DOCUMENT: IT ALL STARTS WITH VERIFYING THE SIGNER

You were just instructed to take the document to a notary public and have it notarized in order to have a request approved or complete a transaction. You may have asked yourself, what does it mean to have a document notarized ?

Notarization  is the authentication of a document as genuine or the verification that a statement was made under oath. The notary public performs the authentication of document, after the signer have been verified. Therefore, the document signer must appear in person before the notary public at the time of notarization, face to face, in the same room.

NOTARIZED DOCUMENT: IT ALL STARTS WITH VERIFYING THE SIGNER

As mentioned above, the first thing to having a document notarized is the signer must appear in person before the notary public in person at the time of notarization, not before or after.

This allows the notary to verify that the person named in the document is, in fact, the person who signed it by also verifying the signers identification. This ensures that a signer is not an impostor trying to benefit from a phony document.

HOW DOES THE NOTARY VERIFY THE SIGNER'S IDENTIFICATION

The notary public will ask for a valid identification. The form of ID can NOT be expired. The most reliable and widely accepted identification are government issued ID cards with your photo. The following are acceptable IDs:

  • State Driver's License
  • State ID Card
  • Passport
  • Military ID
  • Green Cards

AFTER I VERIFY MY IDENTITY, WHAT'S NEXT

Then you are instructed to sign the document in front of the notary, sign the notary's log book, and provide fingerprint , all to serve as proof of personal appearance and that you are NOT an impostor.

Finally, the notary public will perform the notarization ceremony by placing an official seal on your document that informs the end user, the document's issuing or receiving agency,  that the signer has been positively verified and signed by the rightful owner.

WHY IS A NOTARIZED DOCUMENT SO IMPORTANT

A notarized document tells the end user, the document's issuing or receiving agency, that your identity was verified at the time the document was signed. Once notarized, the document is now a trusted instrument that has been authenticated to support a request or transaction by the end user on your behalf.
